HANDCRAFTED WHITE OAK BASKETS
Our History
Shortly after the end of the Civil War in 1876, Edward & Samuel
Day came to North East from Massachusetts. Edward was an
experienced basket maker. The brothers, who had been supplying
the southern market with baskets, set-up shop in North East -
partly to save on transportation costs, also because the forests
along the Susquehanna River were full of White Oak, the best
kind of wood for baskets. Business boomed - during World War I
the factory produced 2,000 baskets weekly.
Our 100% White oak baskets are made from the finest, straight
grained oak. They are handcrafted by Day Basket Factory in the
same manner for ALMOST 150 YEARS. Our Craftsman carefully
select and split each piece of oak used by our skilled weavers,
who produce our baskets using techniques passed down by
generations of basket makers.
